Jessica Statham is a professional flamenco dancer and teacher based in Sydney. She lived for many years in Madrid where she studied at the renowned Amor de Dios academy with artists such as Marco Flores, Manuel Liñan, Concha Jareño, Domingo Ortega, David Paniagua and more, all considered to be at the cutting edge of flamenco today. During her time there she was fortunate to be given opportunities to perform in some of Madrid's tablaos including the popular 'El Juglar'.
Since returning to Australia she has performed with flamenco groups around the country though most notably as a featured artist of Bandaluzia, one of Australia’s most innovative and celebrated flamenco ensembles. She has gained a reputation for her impeccable rhythm and footwork, graceful body technique, impressive musicality and powerful style, making her a valuable member of Australia’s contemporary flamenco scene.
She tours nationally and internationally to critical acclaim, winning the Sydney Fringe Festival’s Dance Award in 2013 with Bandaluzia, collaborating on Rosalie Cocchiaro’s “Flamenquendo” which won the Adelaide Fringe Festival’s Dance Award in 2014 and was also named one of Dance Australia Magazine’s most outstanding artists for 2013.
"Statham's dancing bridged the two - from the graceful elegance of her arm movements to the furious rhythmic precision of her footwork" - John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald 17/09/2012
"Bandaluzia is winning high praise for it's unique Australian interpretation of the powerful music and dance form... with their thrilling blend of passion and virtuosity" - Gabriel Wilder, Sydney Morning Herald 01/09/2012
"As with tango, music and dance are entwined in Flamenco. Jessica Statham made physical the music's elegance, sadness, exaltation and haughty sexuality, while her feet made the stage an instrument as real as the guitar, stamping out stirring rhythmic variations." - John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald 19/02/2011
